Eighties Fashion Style

She's the pop singer seen jogging in Central Park. Madonna captured the style and fashion sense of generation. Especially teenage girls in the 1980s. Madonna is among the most influential people of the 1980s.

Madonna has always had a special relationship with the media. While many stars try desperately to avoid the paparazzi, Madonna has the power to manipulate the media to her advantage.

In 1985 Madonna ruled the airwaves and MTV too. Madonna at her peak was making music, videos and even movies at a fevered pace. Madonna had the media all sewn up by the mid 1980s. Madonna never had too much trouble from the paparazzi. She, in fact, seemed to embrace the photographers throughout her early career.

From her wildly teased and colored hair to the return of lace and fishnet stockings, her accessories were outrageous, and girls around the world wanted to be like Madonna even going so far as to add her trademark mole to their cheeks.

Paris Fashion Week

Paris Fashion Week as always was a major destination for the designer crowd recently. Boasting some of the hottest names in the industry and an A grade guest list, Paris is the home of Haute Courture.

Naturally plenty of press were on hand to give a blow by blow description of each days high and low lights. Now that the closing ceremony has come and gone the critics have given their overview of proceedings and as always it has involved an over use of adjectives and overstating the obvious.

The Bakings of a Memorable Memorial Day

Today we honor the memory of our nation's heroes.

It's a day of gratitude.

Of dignity.

And, you know, stuff like this:

"Hon hon hon! I em zee embodiment of 'deegnitee!' Wee wee!"*

And speaking of wee wee...

I'm not really sure what this is, but the shape kind of rings a bell.
(I'm thinking...Arby's?)

And speaking of belles, the bodice on this dress could really use some work:

It's LIFT and separate, girls. No Yankee doodle dandy wants saggy clappers, if yaknowwuddamean.

Remember: patriotism is a family affair:

If not necessarily "family friendly."

And for a little "variety," there's always the WTF CCC:

That's "Way To Flotsamize," by the way.

Since today is about our military, though, try to keep the focus on those great men and women who have served in our armed forces.

See how the focal point here is the cookie soldier being run down and fired on by the chocolate tank?

That's NOT what I had in mind.

And finally, you know that feeling of satisfaction you get when a hoity-toity grammar snob corrects your grammar, but s/he's WRONG?

This feels kind of like that.

Quick grammar tip: if you can substitute the word "him," use "whom." But if "he" works, use "who." Ergo, "HE paid," not "HIM paid."

Thanks to Margaret D., Amy W., Andrea P., Holly Anne, Andrea P., Lyndi R., & Becky D., for whom [eyebrow waggle] I will be forever grateful. Or at least until tomorrow.

*John's Disclaimer: This was Jen's attempt at a French accent. See, 'cause the dog is a poodle, and poodles speak French. Although he also looks a bit English with the mustache and goatee. Or maybe a bit like Colonel Sanders. Oh! Who was a Colonel!** In the military!

So, in conclusion, eating KFC today is patriotic, and all poodles speak French. Thank you. That is all.

** John's Disclaimer to the Disclaimer: Actually, he was only a private but was given the honorary title of Kentucky Colonel later in life. Man! You guys*** are picky!

*** John's Disclaimer to the Disclaimer to the Disclaimer: By "guys" I mean people, and not necessarily one gender over another. I could have just as easily used "folks." though that would imply that you live in the country. Which you may not. Okay, I'm done.

Sunday Sweets: Shoes & Purses

Ok, so a few weeks ago when I said I found purse and shoe cakes a little boring, what I *meant* was I'd only find them boring until enough of you wrote in demanding that I feature purse and shoe cakes. Um. Yeah. That's it. ;)

So, by popular demand, here's the best of the best of the best! Sir!

(And just so we're clear: none of these are boring; they're awesome.)

Enjoy.

Spa Girl loves her Friends!

Several friends recently got together to form a Healing Kiva to study Autogenics, Tibetan bowl mediation and to do some Reiki work—all in the name of relaxation and sustained health. A traditional Kiva was a square-walled subterranean room utilized for cultural and spiritual purposes by ancient peoples of the American southwest; echoing in a way, contemporary spas of today.

Bringing a group of friends together to share such an adventure is definitely empowering! The collective energy and excitement, perhaps even bewilderment of learning, trusting in each other and sharing is remarkable.

Our coach explained her own healing path and the study of several modalities, specifically of Autogenics.

Autogenics requires time and discipline to learn, unlike progressive muscle relaxation, which is a simple and easily learned technique. Like mediation, which I still find difficult, it will be interesting to see if over the next eight weeks I can calm my mind and relax my body in order to appreciate the many benefits of Autogenics. I can only anticipate how good it would feel to be able to take time prior to a massage to coach myself into a state of relaxation in order to truly benefit from the massage work.

Autogenics is a relaxation technique involving a series of attention-focusing exercises designed to induce relaxation and enhance the body’s self-healing powers. Similar to self-hypnosis and meditation its purpose is to enable people to learn how to put themselves in a relaxed state releasing muscle tension and dealing with anxiety without the need of a trainer or therapists.

Autogenic training evolved out of the research of Brain physiologist Oskar Vogt in the 1880’s at the Berlin Neuro Biological Institute. His work provided the inspiration for Johannes Schultz, a Berlin psychiatrist and neurologist to investigate the therapeutic potential of auto-hypnosis exercises from which autogenic training emerged.

There is a wealth of research data available on the therapeutic applications of Autogenics. Many studies relating to autogenic training also refer to Biofeedback which is a system created out of autogenic training methods incorporating the use of electrical equipment designed to monitor stress levels through respiration rates, skin temperature and blood flow.

Only one other time have I had a massage when I was totally relaxed and truly understood the amazing benefits of body work, it was after a Watsu session. Usually I have a massage in order to chill out! I wrote about it on my blog: http://spagirl007.blogspot.com/2009/11/spa-girl-says-watsu-is-massage-magic.html

Spa Girl loves her friends and the many luxuries they bring to her life! For more information on Autogenics check out these sites:

Anne Keothavong In Action

Anne Keothavong has claimed she would have done broken into the world's top 50 years ago were it not for “unprofessional people” at the Lawn Tennis Association.
The 25-year-old rose four places to 48th in the rankings, following her run to the semi-finals in the Cellular South Cup in Memphis last week.
She is the first British woman since Jo Durie 16 years ago to make it into the top 50, and it continues the relatively late blossoming of a player who was ranked 134th 12 months ago.
But, although Keothavong is now content with the support provided to her by the LTA, she has criticised the sport's governing body in Britain for hampering her progress earlier in her career.
The Londoner, who turned professional in 2001, said she was now reaping the benefits of working with coaches she could trust.

Murray prescribed, “His beginning was very fine and sound, striking the ball solid with his forehand and I was hitting it short. But after 3-0 in the first set I performed well until 5-1 (in the second) and then completely misplaced attentiveness, and finished up being in a battle at the end, which I didn’t essentially need.

He further said, “I was much gladder with the means I punch the ball today compared to my first match, bar the first and last three games.”

Somewhere else, sixth seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina facilitated past Janko Tipsarevic 6-4 6-1, and 11th seed David Ferrer of Spain defeat Croatia’s Marin Cilic 3-6 6-3 6-4.

On the other hand In the women’s draw, 13th seed Caroline Wozniacki defeat fourth seed Elena Dementieva 7-5 6-4 to participate in a quarter-final against eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, who beat fellow Russian Alisa Kleybanova 6-2 6-1. Samantha Stosur carried out her win over second seed Dinara Safina by thrashing Amelie Mauresmo 6-4 6-4, and the Australian now face 11th seed Victoria Azarenka , who crushed Agnes Szavay 6-2 6-4.
