In a recent episode of the excellent National Geographic series on Asia, China. It highlighted how woman in the early Ching Dynasty were told that binded feet is a sign of wealth, charm and feminine character. Girls as young as 7 or 8 would be brought to a feet binder by her mother, her feet woudl be soaked in a tube of herbal medicine, that essentially numbed the feet. Then held by her mother, the feet binder would then proceed to break every toes of the young girl, then bind her feet tighly. Her feet would then be stunted for life. All this time the mother is mistakenly thnking this is all good for her daughter. The tradition of feet binding was later banned. But in some parts of China it has stubbornly been retained.
So some traditions are not worth to keep.
