Advantages of using CFL lighting

Compact Fluorescent Light or CFL as they are commonly known as have increasing become the lighting of choice - be it in homes or offices. Let's look at the advantages of having CFL lighting over the normal bulbs.

First consider the various environmental impacts of using CFL. I guess around 4 years back an European Union ruling compelled all businesses in EU to dispose of most lamps, including fluorescent types in an environmentally considerate manner. This obligation now extends to USA and a host of other countries as well.

Make sure you install 10% more light than you need as the light output falls off with age, also the light output will not reach maximum until they are at running temperature.

Flicker from CFL lamps should not be an issue when they are new as the frequency at which they operate is around 20,000 Hz, however, as they age the smoothing capacitor in the power supply of the lamp circuit looses its capacity and the 50Hz mains flicker may become apparent to some more sensitive people. The solution is to change the lamp OR run them off 240V DIRECT CURRENT from a battery supply charged by your UPS perhaps.

A regular bulb creates light by heating a tungsten wire to white hot. 90% of the energy consumed by the lamp is lost as heat into the surrounding environment. A typical incandescent (ordinary) bulb has an efficiency of 12 to 15 lumens per watt (12 Lm/w). In other words you only get 15 units of light for every unit of electricity you put in. Now compare this with a CFL. This lamp creates light by exciting atoms of mercury vapour, making them give off ultra violet light. This UV then hits the white coating on the inside of the lamp and is converted into the light we see. Very little heat is produced in this process, giving this type of lamp an efficiency of 60 Lm/w which is 4 or 5 times greater than the ordinary bulb. So a 20 watt CFL will give the same light as a 100 watt bulb at one fifth of the cost (or electricity used and lower carbon emissions etc). You can also use them as Shop Work Lights.

Also, CFLs last about 5 times longer than incandescent. In addition to cost savings you're also saving electricity which reduces the demand for new power plants.

There are those that still argue against them based on their mercury content, but it's just silly. The mercury level in bulbs today is so low as to run no risk to the user. Where it is a problem is when they're disposed of, so the best thing to do is recycle them properly.

So yes, they are worth it. LEDs will probably be the ideal light in the future but for now they have many hurdles to overcome (cost, lack of fill lighting). For at least the next 5 years, CFLs are the way to go.

Sean Penn Files For Divorce

After splitting up 3 times in one year, Sean Penn has finally decided that he's had enough of Robin Wright and has officially filed for divorce.

If you remember the Oscars this year, Sean Penn didn't thank Robin Wright when he won but he did thank the "homo-loving sons of guns." Now if that didn't send a clear message that they were about to get divorced, I don't know what would.

Sean Penn seems to be the one who runs the show in that marriage and it looks like he's had enough. He probably wants to get better acquainted with Natalie Portman now that the two are doing a movie together. Hey, ya never know.

Vodafone ZooZoo Cartoon Ads: Are they real humans?

ZooZoo's are the new eye-catching and very funny looking creatures in the new Vodafone ads that are mostly screened during the current IPL matches. But little did anyone know that they were real human's that were acting the show and not some animated character's as most of us had previously thought off. ZooZoo have now become an icon for Vodafone. Fresh from the Vodafone's Ad inventory, these cute and pesky looking characters promote most of Vodafone's services in a very funny, quirky and laughable way.

ZooZoo's were conceptualized by the Ad agency O&M for the latest Vodafone Ad campaigns. ZooZoo characters though they look like animated characters are actually played by real people. The real people are dressed in white outfits. The sets have been constructed by shadows created by spray painting.

It seems that the production team divided the outfit into two separate parts - body and head. The body part of the outfit was stuffed with foam in some places, while the head was attached separately. To make it look bigger than a human head, a harder material called Perspex was used, which in turn was stuffed with foam (with scope for ventilation). Here's how they decided on the size of ZooZoo's head: a human head would typically reach up to the mouth level of this giant Zoozoo head. So the creators kept the hands and legs thin. Also, the cast comprised mostly of women – and occasionally children coz they fitted well into it. The thin limbs, contrasted with big bellies and a bulbous head, all add to the illusion that these creatures are ‘smaller’ than humans.

Sets were actually created to suit the size of the Zoozoos. Cinematically, ZooZoo's actual size was a trick: the creatures look smaller than they actually are on screen, this was done deliberately to portray a different world of sorts. For this, the speed of shooting was altered, it is originally shot in a high-speed format to make them look the size that they do and also make their movements look funny.

Also, another trick up the sleves of O&M was to use simple backdrops that were created and spray painted with neutral Greys – a colour of choice so that attention isn’t diverted from the ZooZoo's (main characters). And also for a supposedly ‘outdoor’ shot, even the shadow of a Zoozoo was kept ‘live’ and not done in post production: it was painted in a darker shade of grey on the ground!!. And an even lighting was maintained throughout. O&M claims that there was virtually no post production work done.

The films were shot by Nirvana Films in Cape Town, South Africa, with the help of a local production house there, called Platypus. Incidentally, the same combination of people also worked on the ‘Happy to Help’ series last year round for Vodafone.

Also there is a very cool ZooZoo community on Facebook which has thousands of fans(including me). The group has ZooZoo commercials that have been released so far, ZooZoo emoticons and also ‘Tag me’ application.

You can also watch all the ZooZoo Video's online here.

Jennifer Aniston - Ferris Bueller

Jennifer Aniston picoodleJennifer Aniston appeared in Ferris Bueller (Television) played main role as Jeannie Bueller.

Ferris Bueller is an American sitcom based on the 1986 John Hughes' film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Ferris Bueller debuted August 23, 1990 on NBC and was cancelled within its 1rst season, a few months after its debut. Ferris Bueller show starred Charlie Schlatter in the title role (which was played by Matthew Broderick in the film). Outside of its fan base, Ferris Bueller show is known for having starred a then relatively-unknown Jennifer Aniston in the role of the main character's sister, Jeannie Bueller (played by Jennifer Grey in the film). Ferris Bueller show was produced by Maysh, Ltd. Productions in association with Paramount Television.

Ferris Bueller... Though based on the movie, the series was not a continuation of the film, rather, the series was set up to portray itself as being the "real life," situations after which the film was based. In the pilot episode, Ferris (Schlatter) refers to the film and expresses his displeasure at Matthew Broderick portraying him, even going as far as destroying a life-size cardboard cutout of Broderick with a chainsaw. As in the film, the series focused on Ferris Bueller and his high school experiences, including dealing with his sister Jeannie (Aniston), his friend Cameron (Douglas), and Bueller's love interest Sloan (Dolenz). Unlike the film, which was set in Chicago, the series was set in Los Angeles.

Cast: * Charlie Schlatter as Ferris Bueller * Richard Riehle as Principal Ed Rooney * Jennifer Aniston as Jeannie Bueller * Ami Dolenz as Sloan Peterson * Brandon Douglas as Cameron Frye * Cristine Rose as Barbara Bueller * Sam Freed as Bill Bueller * Judith Kahan as Grace * Jeff Maynard as Arthur Petrelli * Jerry Tullos as Mr. Rickets * David Glasser as Dork * Brandon Rane as Wimp

Julia Roberts Gets Drunk, Honors Tom Hanks

Julia Roberts is usually known for giving speeches in which she strokes her own ego in a subtle way. Well, all that has changed, my friend.

Julia Roberts gave a speech to honor Tom Hanks at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and man did Julia Roberts ever make attending a gig like that worthwhile.

Julia Roberts' speech went something like this (and yes, she was hella drunk):

"Alright well, it's late and I'm paying my babysitter overtime and I have to pee. So Tom, everybody fucking likes you. All my bits are gone. Listen, I had lunch today with Rita [Wilson], and her tits were here [motioned high] and her waist was here [motioned small] and her ass was like that [motioned high], so what can I tell you that's new? Tom Hanks, what the f*ck?

"I love the Coen brothers, but the hair Tom [Ladykillers], I didn't even know what the fuck that movie was about! You in the airport with the accent (Terminal)? It was a pass for me. Airport? Were you just an immigrant lost? I didn't know. I love you, and I didn't know what to do, really. God, I’m wearing the same f*cking dress tonight as your publicist! Listen, I've got to get home. But this much we know ... I will say this: Tom Hanks, I love you."

Seriously, I have a new respect for Julia.

Flip Hole - another toy from Tenga

The Tenga Flip Hole has got me stunned.

For a while, many will think that is it just a normal plastic container, but definitely, it is more to it.

Developed by Mr Matsumoto, who was a car engineer for a well know Japan Car Brand, he conceived the idea of applying silicon to develop his first range of sex toys. This was also the first range of red series cups. In 2008, Tenga released their first reusable masturbation toy – Tenga Flip Hole.

The hottest selling toy in Japan, the Flip Hole is a product in a league of its own. Developed after intense research, and boosting a innovative design, the product consists of a few sections classified into orb. All serve to give an immense pleasurable experience which traditional products will not be able to achieve. Indeed, this product is ahead of other products by light years.

The Tenga Flip Hole Fliphole

Interior design

The click orb extends, gives stimuli and sensation. The side rib gives a stimulus from both sides. The Wing gate provides and firm and clinging experience. Next comes Quattro wave which gives wave after wave of stimulus. Finally, the end orb provides 360 degrees stimulation. The effect of all the various orb means that the Flip Hole is a toy which many of the other toys cannot match

How to use

Remove the wrapper that comes with it.

Open flip, there are 3 different lotions that come with it. Select the lotion that you prefer, pour lotion via an opening at hole. Buttons at the central pack increases the pressure at various parts of the organ. One just to to press and feel the different sensations.

Following is just to use it and experience the stimulus as described above.

To add, the flip hole is a cool toy and can be found at our Sex Toy Store at an affordable price.

In the last quarter of 2009, Tenga Japan has released a sequel to the Tenga Flip Hole.

A day before my quarter-life crisis!!

I am doomed lor I am starting to blog this picture post at 7am (haven't slept) and there are 156 pictures!

I'm gonna try not to put too many words in.

Almost recovered from my third-degree burns.

Can still see my arm peeling!

KK and her bf wanted a puppy so she took me to the Seletar puppy mill... The living conditions for both humans (humans there sleep in same room as dogs on thin mattresses - can you say stinky?!) and dogs there is really horrible! It's like not a part of Singapore man!

The stud is from the mill and it's mad dirty-looking lah. The old man works there and he isn't too clean either.

But overall, I'd say the mill is not as bad as people often describe lah. You can drive there and see if you want! Seletar farmway.

Anyway... The photo is of two malteses fucking, obviously. The bottom is someone's pet. As you can see it's much better groomed.

I'm becoming one of those annoying animal lover people because I'm quite irritated that the owner would want his dog to give birth.

Doesn't he know that birth could have serious consequences and could possibly even KILL his dog? Why would anyone who love their pets knowingly make their pets die younger?!

But well... His dog.

Jon and KK's new puppy!!

It doesn't like you

2 months old only and it's yorkie/shih tzu mix!!

It's mad floppy and it's super weird coz it's apricot in colour...

The irony. My old Canon Ixus taking a photo of my new Lumix.

Well goodbye! I'm never gonna have problems with macro shots again.

It's like poetic justice that the last batch of photos the Ixus takes will be that of the great Lumix.

Without flash - dark plus blur.

Before blinging, I apply white nail polish to the black leather strip to make the background colour even.

In between the big gems are tiny pink pearl gems.

My birthday started yesterday!!

(26th that is, 2 days before my actual birthday)

I woke up with this on the bed:

Awwwwwwwwwww!

A Bangawan Solo birthday cake may not seem very romantic to most but it feels extra special to me because the brand feels so Singaporean and it reminds me of how Mike gave up his life in USA to come live here with me.

That day I asked him if he knew what Prima Deli is and he said no, so I told him they make pies and pastries. Then he replied, "Oh, is it like Polar?"

Very cute right!!

Then dinner at our favourite restaurant:

I'm gonna be really annoying and not tell you where it is because I am terrified that the place would be flooded with customers and the standard will then drop. If you already know good for you!!

Parma ham covering sweet melon and salad

Baked Eggplant

Mike's chicken tomato-cream pasta

My crabmeat linguine. OMG I love this dish so much!

Everytime I order it, I do this:

Extract the chunks of crab meat to the side
and very very slowly savour them.

They are mad generous with the crab!!

And then back home....

My baby sings the Happy Birthday song to me way too early

Doggie is happy to get some cake

And so am I!

Tomorrow is my birthday so

wish me happy birthday ya all!!!
