Micro USB to connect most of our devices in future

Micro Usb Almost 10 leading mobile / mobility device manufacturers have formally signed a European Commission Memorandum of Understanding which curbs the creation of e-waste by making manufacturers of mobiles to use the standard (Micro USB) for charging the devices and also for connecting them to computers for data exchange.

Micro USB are not to be confused with Mini USB which is already available in many phones especially from Motorola and BlackBerry. Mini USB has a very super cool option that will seamlessly allow different mobile devices to be connected with each other without the actual need for a host computer. The Micro USB is already in use in the Amazon Kindle which has a craze following in the US market.

usb-stick Some of the company’s that have signed the agreement include Apple, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and Texas Instruments. These are the same company’s which are members of the OMTP Forum.

As per the commitment on the MoU signed the manufacturer’s need to roll out all their products with support to Micro USB from the year 2010. This is really a very exciting news since we don’t have to anymore worry about different sets of cables for charging or data transfer purposes. Currently, I have atleast 3-4 sets of chargers for my Sony Ericsson, BlackBerry and Nokia mobiles and another equal number of cables that are needed for syncing each of these devices with my PC / Laptop.

Once, we have the Micro USB standard we can have a single charger and data cable for most of our devices. Imagine using the same charger to charge ur Sony Ericsson mobile as well as your BlackBerry and also your iPod – now that’s gonna be super cool. But, you’ll need to purchase the new models that are released post 2010 (Now that’s a catch).

The best free mobile phone alternative mobile browser to Opera Mini

Skyfire definitely seems to be the best alternative mobile browser to the Opera Mini. Skyfire is a speedy, Flash-playing mobile browser and best of all it's free. Skyfire also provides especially the Windows Mobile users a desktop experience with support for CSS, Ajax, QuickTime, Flash 9, and also Silverlight.

Skyfire has a cool feature called SmartFit, which actually reformats the text on a webpage so that it's as wide as your smartphone's screen when you're zoomed in on any specific section of a page.
Though Skyfire offers all kinds of advanced features, it's pretty cool that the basic features haven't been forgotten too by the developers. It has a full-screen mode and it can help you store cookies and bookmarks. It's even possible to bookmark a specific location on a web page!! (Kinda Web Slice offered by IE).

The main reason why Skyfire is so fast and full-featured is that the browser is server based. When you browse to a web page with your smartphone, it's actually being opened on a Skyfire server, which then sends an image of the page to your phone. Now that causes some security and privacy concerns.

Currently Skyfire is freeware for Windows Mobile and Symbian based phones only.

Hope Opera Mini is watching!!

Got a Sony Ericsson K810i - The Cybershot Phone

I got a brand new Sony Ericsson k810i (The Cybershot Phone) about 2 weeks back and have been enjoying using it.

Well, let me give you a brief history of my love for Sony Ericsson phone - it all started 5-6years back with the T610 that my dad got me. Till then I was snubbed in the world of Nokia with the Nokia 6150(was a pioneer with IR support at that time and a legendary long antennae) and later Nokia 8310(a sleek and small phone - good battery support). But once I was introduced to the facinating world of Sony Ericsson - I never looked back(very truly).

My first SE phone T610 was an awesome handset for that time with cool features like bluetooth and a decent camera. Also, the ability to have your customized themes made it look afresh every few days. Later I got a k700i which I used (very rashly) for more than 2-3years and till the last day I had it in my hand - it performed like a star. The only problem used to be with the joystick acting funny during the monsoon's. Well, I don't want to bore you with the past - let's have a peek into my new Cybershot phone.

The Sony Ericsson K810i is called a Cybershot phone due to the powerful 3.2 Mega Pixel camera that it hosts. The camera is truly awesome and I love each snap that it takes. It has an in-build Image Stabilizer that results in truly flawless images. I have a Sony 8.2 Mega Pixel Camera for personal use but the images produced with my phone are pretty good to print too.

My handset came with a whooping 2GB M2 memory card - but I have already consumed almost 75% of it. I have put in many movies and transferred my song collections. Also, I have huge collection of mobile games - something to the tune of 200+ (not kidding).

Well, I'll keep you posted on the cool features of this wonderful gadget in the coming days.

Here are a few images taken from this phone (Click to enlarge the images).
