Borage Oil for Acne

Borage oil is the oil extracted from the seeds of the borage flower, which is also known by the name of star flower. The scientific name of the borage plant is Borago officinalis. It is a small plant or herb, native to Syria, but has been naturalized in many other parts of the world including, Asia, Europe, South America, North Africa and Mediterranean regions. Borage flowers are usually blue in color, but pink and white varieties can also be found. The oil derived from the seeds of the borage plant are mainly known for its anti-inflammatory properties, for which it is widely used for the treatment of arthritis. The oil has several skin benefits, and is quite excellent for soothing inflamed and irritated skin. This oil can be used for a variety of skin conditions, right from treating acne lesions to skin disorders like, eczema, dermatitis, dry skin and even psoriasis. In this article, we are going to highlight the benefits of borage oil for acne, along with a few other health benefits of this oil.

Borage Oil for Acne Problem

Borage oil has soothing and emollient properties, which is why it can alleviate so many skin conditions including, acne and pimples. It contains the essential fatty acid, known as gamma-linoleic acid, which is so crucial for the health of the skin. This essential fatty acid is vital for maintaining the structure, as well as the flexibility of the cell membrane. The essential fatty acids found in borage oil can help regenerate the skin by promoting the growth of healthy skin cells.

Other important compounds found in borage seed oil are vitamin C, tannin, saponins and certain minerals, all of which can play an important role in making the skin healthy and keeping skin problems like, acne at bay. The tannins present in the oil can tighten the skin. Borage oil can make the skin soft and supple by restoring the level of moisture. For this reason, this oil is quite beneficial to eliminate skin dryness. The gamma-linoleic acid found in borage oil can help to dilute sebum or oil, secreted by the sebaceous glands. Over secretion of sebum is the main factor that causes acne and pimples by clogging the skin pores. One can clear up such clogged skin pores by using borage oil for acne, and thus reduce the appearance of acne lesions.

Borage oil possesses anti-inflammatory properties, for which it can be beneficial in reducing the inflammation and redness caused by acne. At the same time, the cooling and soothing properties of this oil can help alleviate skin irritation caused by acne. Another skin condition, in which borage oil can prove immensely beneficial is rosacea, which gives the face a flushed appearance due to the dilation of blood vessels of the face. Borage oil can help to reduce the inflammation associated with rosacea, and also contract the blood vessels by producing a substance, known as prostaglandins. Apart from acne and rosacea, one can use borage oil for eczema and other skin conditions like, psoriasis and dermatitis. In general, this oil is great for natural skin care.

Other Benefits of Borage Oil

Apart from the benefits of borage oil mentioned above, borage oil is known for several other health benefits. One of the most well-known borage oil benefits is that it can help to relieve the pain, inflammation and stiffness associated with arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. This health benefit can be attributed to the presence of gamma-linoleic acid in borage oil. Along with helping to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis, borage oil can prove beneficial in conditions like, premenstrual syndrome, hot flashes, mood swings, breast tenderness, dry and damaged hair and hair loss. It can help to regulate the circulation of blood and facilitate the transmission of nerve impulses as well.

So, this was a brief overview of benefits of borage oil for acne, as well as its benefits for other skin conditions and health problems. For treating acne, borage oil can be used topically. It is also available in the form of gel and capsules. However, before using borage oil capsules, it is imperative to consult a physician regarding the appropriate dosage, and the precautions to be maintained while taking this supplement. This in turn, can help to avoid the possible borage oil side effects. Borage oil can be toxic, if taken in excessive amounts. So, be sure to take it only in the recommended dosage and under the supervision of a health care provider. People with liver problems should better avoid borage oil supplements or talk to their physician before using the same.

5 Easy Tips To Protect Yourself Against Dry Skin

Our skin can become dry for various reasons. The sebum on the skin can get washed away very fast because of frequent washing of your skin. One of the reasons is that you might be using harsh detergents. The weather may also be playing a part. Dry air will suck the moisture away from our skin. Air conditioners and room heaters are well known to produce dry air and that is one dry skin cause.

When winter comes, the moist, warm weather will soon become dry, cold and harsh. It is a good time to look for a good remedy to combat the dry, chapped, chafed and itchy dry skin. Shielding lotion is now recommended by dermatologists as dry skin treatment. Here are some additional tips that may also help protect you against dry skin.

1. Use sun blocks lotion on sunny days. 15 SPF is usually strong enough, but if you are outdoors for a long time, you need more protection.

2. Although a long, hot bath or shower can feel very comfortable when you are indoors from the cold. However that hot water will cause dry skin just as easily in the winter as the summer. It's also best to use as little soap as possible to avoid washing off protective natural oils.

3. As soon as you get out of the shower, pat dry (rubbing chafes the skin and the towel absorbs too much of the skin's natural oil) and apply a shielding lotion immediately. It can keep the moisture locked in and protect yourself from both the dryness indoors and the harsh elements outdoors. Don't forget about your hands and face.

4. If you're going to be out in the cold for a long time, or you're involved in outdoor sports, you need to prevent overheating and becoming too cold or wet - all of which will cause dry skin. The best way to accomplish all three is to dress in layers of clothes. Silk is best next to our skin. It is good insulation, is soft, lightweight, and allows the skin to breath. It also dries quickly so your skin doesn't chafe from being continually wet. Avoid cotton, it retains moisture.

Wool is moist resistant, and retains its insulating qualities even when it is wet. However, it's not very comfortable right next to the skin. Silk undergarments are readily available in sporting goods stores - pants, tops, and liners for gloves and socks.

5. Use a humidifier if possible. Integrating it into your central heating system is best, but if you have one that's portable, using in the bedroom at night is most effective for preventing dry skin.

Just following the 5 tips above will help you withstand the winter unharmed, and without the cracked, chafed, itchy dry skin that is typical of the season.

Skin Care Tips

Preparing For the Winter Months

Many people think that just because the sun isn't shining down on us as much as it is in the Summer months, that sunblock does not need to be applied during the Winter months. That could not be further from the truth! Sunblock is important no matter what the temperature is. Sunblock not only protects from the violentuv rays of the sun, but it also works to moisturize an protect the skin as well as prevent wrinkle formation.

If there is one thing to apply as you ice skate, downhill ski, go sledding, cross-country skiing, or just spend time outdoors (shoveling snow more like it), it should be sunblock. Immediately after coming back inside, a moisturizer should be applied to the skin. These are two of the best ways to take care of your skin, in a defensive manner, and protect it from the elements such as the cold and wind.

So, tip number one is be sure you have an ample supply of sunblock as well as a good moisturizing cream.

Second, you need to stimulate cellular repair and regrowth. This can be done in a number of ways, with a wide variety of products, so what I'm going to do is list some of the properties and ingredients that I feel are important to keep in mind as you buy skin products.

For starters, a new trend that has been becoming quite popular in the last few years is telomere maintenance. Telomeres are strands of DNA that wear down and become shorter as we age. These days, there are telomere creams that work the skin on a level that aims to restore and replenish the telomeres.

Second, I always like ingredients like squalane, which is derived from olive extract and found naturally in the oils of olives. It's a great anti aging ingredient that once again reaches the cellular level of the skin and works to rejuvenate cells. You can usually find this ingredient in serums. Red and green tea extracts are also becoming quite popular and will work in defense in the winter months.

If you wish to keep your skin looking good throughout the winter, it's important you apply skin products more than usual. This is because the wind, combined with the cold weather, will dry your skin out at a much faster rate than what you are normally accustomed to. If you don't suffer from dry skin all throughout the year, this is one time of year you should pay extra attention to your skin. You don't want to lose out on all the work you've put in throughout the year just because you were lazy during the winter months.

If you follow those winter skin care tips, you should be better off come Spring! Then you can set off and look for that tan you lost during the last few months!

White Spots on Skin Causes

Have you ever come across people who have either mild or prominent white spots on their skin? I always wondered what those white spots on skin causes were but I didn't really give it a second thought until the time my aunt developed them all over her skin. Some in patches, some in spots and some just mild discolorations. That was when I got down to it and researched the whole topic and tried to find logic in the whole hoopla about white spots on the skin. And then I got around to understanding what it all actually means. If you've ever had this problem and want to know what the white spots on skin causes are, read the following article for some clarity on the topic.

Causes of White Skin and White Spots

There is a medical term for white spots on the skin. The condition is called vitiligo or leucoderma. It is a type of skin disorder that affects certain people and results in the formation white spots on skin. The reasons for this happening could be either genetic or environmental. Let us get into these white spots on skin causes in more detail.

Vitiligo
Most of the times the reasons that lead to white spots are pigmentation problems. In vitiligo, the skin develops these specific white patches. This is not painful or contagious but it can, and usually does result in a lot of psychological distress in a person 'coz it directly affects the appearance. Vitiligo can come about due to genes - if someone in the family already has it or due to the auto-immunity factor in which the tissues of the body are attacked by the body's own immune system.

Idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis
This is a type of genetic disorder that results in white spots on skin. This comes about when the thickness of the skin starts reducing and the number of melanocytes cells diminish. One major reason that leads to this is over tanning, like in the case a tanning bed or overexposure to the sun.

Nevus Depigmentosus
This condition could be a factor right from birth. When there are abnormalities in the functioning of melanocytes, thereby producing little pigmentation and resulting in the white spots.

Pityriasis Alba
When there is sub-normal activity of the melanocytes which results in smaller and fewer melanosomes it causes the characteristic white spots to appear. This condition is more prominent in children.

There are certain other causes as well like skin fungus and white spots are in a way connected, and tinea versicolor which is another type of fungus that affects the skin and causes white spots to appear.

How to Treat and Prevent White Spots on Skin

And now that we know what some of the white spots on skin causes are, let's move onto the question of how to cure white spots on skin:
  • Prevent overexposure in the sun.
  • Increase the intake of iron through your diet and other supplements.
  • Avoid certain foods that will trigger any reaction like tamarind, citrus fruits, prawns, sodium and salt.
  • Be absolutely sure about the kind of skin care products you use. Don't use anything that has harsh chemicals in it.
  • Have ginger juice which will increase the flow of blood in your system and fade the white spots.
  • Drink buttermilk regularly.
  • Mix red clay and ginger powder with a few drops of vinegar and make into a paste, then massage onto skin.
  • You can also take over the counter medication like lotions and creams. But make sure that you consult your dermatologist before you start out on one yourself.
And now that it's clear what some of the white spots on skin causes are, make sure that you administer proper skin care and do not allow this problem to develop.
